A Ride for the Future
from Pedal Power’s Executive Director Cecily Michaels
After the buzz of the protest ride faded, I had the privilege of speaking with two young Pedal Power members and two long-standing advocates. As we reflected on the day’s success, it became clear that this movement is about more than just the present—it’s about the future of cycling in Canberra.
Pedal Power has long been at the forefront of cycling advocacy, helping secure the great infrastructure we have today. But it’s the next generation who will carry this mission forward. These young riders are passionate and see safe, separated paths as essential for their daily lives—whether they are commuting, studying, or simply getting around the city.
The protest ride wasn’t just about honouring past efforts; it was a strong call to action for what comes next. As Executive Director, I’m inspired by the energy and commitment of our younger members. Their involvement shows that the fight for safer streets isn’t over—there’s more to be done, and they’re ready to lead the way.
Pedal Power’s future is in good hands, and together, we’ll keep pushing for a Canberra where cycling is safe, accessible, and prioritised for everyone—young and old.
