Our Campaigns

Below are some recent campaigns Pedal Power has run to demand better active travel infrastructure in Canberra.

  • Northbourne Avenue is Canberra’s most dangerous road to ride a bike on.

We are campaigning to demand more separated bike-only paths to keep Canberra cyclists safe.

The Government had planned to upgrade the infrastructure when it built the Light Rail and yet that did not happen, and we still have six lanes for vehicles on Northbourne.

Over the past decade, data has been collected about crashes in Canberra. The data is limited to incidents that were reported online or to which police responded, but we do know that more than half of these crashes happened in the inner northern suburbs, with concentrations along Northbourne as well as areas in the city that have bike lanes.

About 43 per cent of the Northbourne incidents were attributed to a “side swipe” from a vehicle travelling in the same direction and about 41 per cent of the Northbourne crashes resulted in injury.

We launched our campaign for a separated bike-only path on Northbourne Avenue, in March 2024 followed by protest rides in April and October.

Over 100 Pedal Power members and supporters attended each of the rides.

Other ways you can support this campaign:

    1. Share your Northbourne stories
We will be asking you to share your stories from riding on Northbourne Avenue. We want to know why you do or don’t choose to ride on Northbourne Avenue and what factors make you feel safe or unsafe.

    2. Write to the decision makers
Write to your local MLA, Federal Minister or submit a letter to the editor.

    3. Ride with us
in our next protest ride. Details coming soon.

  • In January 2024 we launched a campaign demanding safer crossings on Redfern St in Cook.
