West Belconnen bike bus

If you live in the West Belconnen area and would like to start commuting by bike but are not sure of what route to take, the bike bus is for you!

The West Belco Bike Bus has now been operating once a month since August 2024. It has been running between West Belconnen and the parliamentary triangle (about an hour’s ride) on the first Monday of each month, with people joining and leaving the group as it passes through Belconnen, University of Canberra, AIS, O’Connor, Civic, ANU and Barton.

On the recent December ride, Pedal Power’s Executive Director Cecily Michaels joined the bus to connect with the community and support this important initiative which directly helps our mission of encouraging more people on bikes. Not knowing the best route from home to work is a barrier to people commuting by bike. The bus allows people learn which way to take and increases their chances of choosing two wheels for their commute in the future, reducing emissions and contributing to their physical and mental health.

At the recent ride, local commuters also enjoyed the company of Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry, herself an occasional cyclist, who like the other participants, enjoyed the company and conversation along the route.

There is now a WhatsApp group so participants can ask questions and alert others to their location and intentions to join the ride at various locations. If there’s enough interest from people in the future it may become a fortnightly, or possibly even a weekly bike bus like in other cities such as Chicago.

So whether you are a new or experience commuter in the area, we hope to see you at the next bike bus! If you would like to join the WhatsApp group please message Elias on 0419 963 333.

The West Belco Bike Bus has been supported from its inception by Hiria Reppion from SEE Change Belconnen and Paris Lord from Canberra By Bike.
